If the reports are to be believed, in tomorrow's budget George Osborne is going to reduce the spending of various givernment departments by £2.5 million. Considering how he has so far failed to rein in government spending this at last sounds like good news....
....until you read that he is instead going to spend this money elsewhere to "invest in capital projects." In other words, he is cuttng spending in some areas only to increase it in others. It's not a spending cut at all, but robbing Peter to pay Paul.
So public spending will still be at astronomical levels, and all this from a Conservative government. No wonder people are deserting the party in droves. Weren't they meant to be the party of small government? Weren't they the party that told us that it was Labour's spending binge got us into our cnrrent mess?
Swapping Alistair Darling for George Osborne doesn't alter the basic facts: government is the problem, not the solution. It is doing far more than its Biblical mandate, which is to maintain law and order, defend our property from enemies at home and abroad and to protect the weak and vulnerable. It is because it is doing too much that we are in so much debt.
So when is it going to dawn on people that we are never going to get out of this economic mess if people keep urging the Chancellor to be proactive in this area or that area? We must cut the deficit, but if we want to see growth as well, then use some of the cuts in public spending to fund a tax cut for business or for the consumer. It's the private sector's role to creates growth. If the state tries to do so, all it creates is problems.
